Investigative Tips: Statewide Records Searches - Washington State

December 11th, 2008

Washington State has one site that’s dedicated to providing several different types

of records for free. The available records include: birth records, death records,

marriage records, professional licenses, naturalization records, military records,

and property records.

I’ve included the site described above along with several others for your searching

pleasure. Why pay when you might be able to find what you need for free? If you

aren’t able to find everything you need make sure to come back to Recordchecks.com.

If you have questions or specific requests please email me at chris@investigatormedia.com.

I’m also getting a lot of good feedback from the last post about using sites like

Myspace and Facebook to enhance an investigation. Please keep the ideas coming…

Using Myspace.com, Facebook.com, and other websites as an investigative resource

December 1st, 2008

I knew that the networking sites like Myspace.com and Facebook.com were popular,

but I was shocked at the extent. Myspace.com claims over 300 million users (although

it’s unclear how many of those are active). Facebook.com claims 120 million active

users, and those numbers are growing fast. The number of unique visitors on Facebook

grew by over 150% between June 07 and June 08, according to Comscore.com. The

sheer number of users makes it clear that these sites and others like them are an

ENORMOUS resource for investigators and anyone else looking for information.

I was also surprised to learn that over half of Myspace.com visitors are at least 35 years

old. At least assuming people are telling the truth when they create their profile. On

that note, I read through Myspace.com’s and Facebook.com’s terms of use agreements

and noticed that, on both of these sites, one has to be at least 13 years old to be

eligible to create a profile. I’d bet a lot of money that there are plenty of kids with a

Myspace or Facebook page that are younger than that. That, of course, means that they

are lying when they create their profile, which, for all you lawyers out there, is

information that could possibly be used for witness impeachment, in certain situations.

Many law enforcement agencies utilize a variety of websites, including Myspace.com

and Facebook.com, as a means of finding evidence and other information that supports

their investigation. They have varying degrees of success depending on what their

subjects have posted. After just a few minutes of researching this, I was astonished at

what people were posting on their public pages.

I found pictures of people posing with guns and drugs. Others wrote on their message

boards and blogs about killing law enforcement officers and snitches. Underage kids had

posted pictures of themselves and their friends drinking at parties. If all of these things

are on public pages, I’m very curious about what could possibly be on the private pages.

If I were a criminal defense lawyer, I would have my clients take down anything that

they’ve posted online for fear it could really be used against them.

These websites are clearly helpful to police officers and probation officers. This resource,

however, is not only helpful for law enforcement, but for private investigators and

defense investigators as well. And it’s not just Myspace.com and Facebook.com either.

Other sites, like Linkedin.com and Classmates.com, can have valuable information.

Just by doing a Google search I was able to find a work location and work schedule for

one person I was recetly looking for. That helped me pinpoint when they’d be home and

I didn’t have to waste my time on a stake out. Even finding out something as simple as a

favorite football team of a witness you have to interview can help you build rapport with

them. There are a million blogs and forums out there about all kinds of things. Many

cities have community blogs where people write about crimes and other incidents that

occur where they live. News and other media sites also have blogs and forums.

The amount of information out there is endless, and the internet isn’t going anywhere.

Blogs and networking sites will only get more popular. If you have to conduct any type

of investigation, start by searching the internet. Learn as much as you can about your

case before you hit the streets.

I’ll update this post as I find more information. Please let me know if you have anything

helpful to add by posting a comment. I can also be contacted directly at

More free public record sites are coming soon. Don’t forget to go to Recordchecks.com

when you can’t find what you need on the free sites.

Background Checks for Employment Purposes

August 26th, 2008

What is a background check?

Background check (for employment purposes), also called the reference check, is an investigation conducted on candidates who are chosen for jobs that require high specialization, responsibility and trust. Background checks have gained popularity due to its highly convincing nature on which the employer’s decision on selecting a candidate depends. Defaulters, Frauds, Forgers and rampant cases of lying Curriculum Vitae are a few important reasons that instigated firms to conduct background checks as a mandate function of an employer.

What do they check for in a Resume?

Your resume is the most important thing on which your job depends. A good, well produced resume will earn you the job, whereas a bad resume goes directly into the trash can. But, the selected resume, despite being the best, is subject to background check.

The following credentials are verified on a resume:

  • Your Name
  • Permanent Address
  • Qualification
  • Date (Date of Birth, date of graduation, date of resignation from previous company)
  • Achievement (if any)
  • Possibility of aliases
  • Criminal Records
  • Financial Records (to avoid cases of bankruptcy)

How do they trace information about the employee?

Background check is just another detective game. It is outsourced to firms that specialize in background check who charge a fee for revealing records of the candidate in question.

Pay sites are launched all over the internet to assist in revealing the credible information about employees, which provide easy availability of employee credentials to companies. One such website is http://www.recordchecks.com

Background check is a negative as well as positive connotation which is an absolute necessity for protecting the interests of both employers and employees.

The importance of ordering a criminal check

August 2nd, 2008

If you are looking to hire an individual to either work for your company, to perhaps to tutor your children or work as a housekeeper in your home, then you may want to gain access to their criminal report. This report on the criminal activity of an individual is normally done when a background check is requested.

These types of checks can give you a lot of quality information about the person you are thinking of hiring a criminal record check can also be done by individuals if they want to find out information regarding someone they are involved with personally.

There are several websites, such as RecordChecks.com, that allow you to look up criminal report information on individuals. These websites can give you information about traffic violations, any felonies they may have committed and even sex offenses.

This information can be used when hiring an individual, looking to rent a home to someone and also looking to protect your children from someone you do not trust. You should, however, be leery of some of the free websites that offer online criminal record information. Some websites will do the search for you, but refuse to give the information until you pay a fee.

If you are ready to search for an individual’s offensive report, then you need some basic information. In court records you need the correct legal name, birth date and social security number if possible. Some people have a completely clean criminal record, but for those that don’t; you can look in court records and find all charges that have been filed against them. There are three different types of crimes. The first is an infraction. This type of crime is not as serious as the others, and usually does not require jail time, just a fine.

The next is a misdemeanor. The punishment could be jail time or jail time as well as a fine. Access to court records can usually tell you what the punishment was. The next type of crime is a felony. These are punished by jail time. Doing a criminal record search on someone might bring surprising results.

If you are looking to hire a new employee, for business or in your home, then you may want to look up their criminal report information. Finding out information about a person’s offensive past isn’t nearly as difficult as one might think it is.

Criminal reports are part of public records and can be accessed by anyone. It may take a little time however, especially if you are looking to conduct the search online. As long as you have some information about the individual, you will be able to do a criminal record search and find out what you need to know.

Facts about Birth Records

July 29th, 2008

There are no centralizations of public documents in the United States compared to other countries. Birth records were maintained under each State’s storage which is either the Vital Statistics Bureau or the State Health Department. Aside from the State storages, the local government such as counties also stores their own copies of birth certificates of the people born under their area of jurisdiction. The records are kept not only for archive purposes but also for genealogical needs. Some sites such as Ancestry.com maintain a countrywide database with information collected from all the American states and also from the people supporting the site.

Way back before, government officials only maintain birth records at a local level until they realized that centralizing it by state can give more secure storage for the records. This is due to the problems arising from the growing number of population and more people keep on relocating from one place to another. With a statewide storage of records, retrieval of records anywhere in the state will no longer be an issue. Prevention of record damages because of natural disasters such as flood and fire is also one of the advantages of a wide alternative storage.

In the early 1900’s, people keep a record of their birth in family Bibles or not keep it at all. Until in 1935, the Social Security Administration began the practice of keeping people’s records that also gives awareness to people on the importance of keeping their own records, too.

Most of the misconceptions about birth records are that they were kept in hospitals where the person was born. It’s not true. Some hospital records may include some details of your birth but with millions of patients, as you grow old, they can no longer find your records because they are not storing it in a database anyway. And one more thing, it is not the hospitals primary responsibility to store and retrieve public records for people. They’d rather save lives than waste their time finding your medical birth records just like finding a needle in a haystack!

Another misconception is that the United States Census Bureau is thought to be the one responsible for keeping birth certificates. Some personal information such as name, address and age were recorded in census files but basically the U.S. Census Bureau is not responsible for keeping the birth certificates at all, not even a copy.

The fact remains that birth certificates are kept by the state authorities and birth records can be accessible online through records search sites that provides comprehensive public records. Article Source:

10 Mistakes To Avoid When Building A Home Based Business

July 29th, 2008

A home based business will provide you with an exciting way to earn money and be your own boss and to gain independence and financial freedom. The home-based business trends report reveals that service businesses are hot news for 2008, allowing aspiring entrepreneurs to start their home based businesses quickly and without the hassles associated with inventory management and control. Some of the home-based businesses you can start today are:

E-Learning

E-Bay Aftermarket

Background Checks

Specialized Outsourcing

Scrap Booking

It is easy to start a work at home based business, but much more difficult to build it, to make it succeed, to avoid the traps , pitfalls , frustrations and enjoy the fruits of success over the years. Among the thousands of entrepreneurs over the past 10 years, the following mistakes among the home based businesses are given below:

1. Lack of capital: Capital includes time, money and motivation. Some have one or two, but not all three, and they fail because they cannot sustain growth in their business.

2. Fear: Either a person has a sense of being overwhelmed by the business start-up or a refusal to master the work involved with being an entrepreneur with a home business. You need specific skills to own and run a successful home based business. Learn them and you can master a home business!

3. No planning and too many random efforts: Some home based business owners try some direct mailing, offer free samples, try a little radio, etc. and then state that they’ve tried everything. Pick only one and stay the course. Become identified with your marketing techniques. Choose your logo, name, plan, and marketing techniques and stay the course!

4. Lack of commitment: Building a work at home based business is risky. Some people perceive the risk as huge. But home based business risks are significantly less than other types of businesses. Manage your risks, limit your potential losses and understand your risks. Stay committed!

5. Refusal to target an audience. No one can sell their home based business services to everyone. Your Internet marketing efforts that goes to everyone is unlikely to create sales to all.

6. Confusing message. Be precise and specific on the exact benefits that your home based business provides. And make it easy for people to contact you.

7. Choosing wrong audiences. A market that cannot pay or an audience that is too small results in disaster. Poor people desperately need medical or legal services, but who is going to pay you? The same when attempting to reach people that are dispersed over a large area and not easily identified.

8. Too little relationship building. Advertising works well for products where customers see the results. The more people know you, your professionalism and quality, the more business you will do. Build large networks of relationships.

9. Having a product or service that fails to produce as promised. Don’t be incompetent. Use current technology and don’t be sloppy in your delivery. Only one mistake can undermine client confidence and trust.

10. Laziness and greed. To succeed with a home based business, you must serve your customers! The statement “I want to be my own boss with a business that supports me.” may be true, but you still need to focus on customers first!

Criminal Background Checks Today

July 29th, 2008

If you want to view someone’s criminal records, you probably know that it’s hard to find a site which you can do it for free. You see, it costs money to maintain a database and have it up and running on the net. Anyway, I didn’t expect a Government Agency to try and make money from it. You see the state agency which keeps all the criminal records in Alabama is going to charge for anyone who wants a criminal background checks done. And for employers, they’re charging $25 a criminal backgrounds search.

Thats like highway robbery or something.

But the kicker is, they don’t even try to hide it. You see, Lynne Child from The Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center (CJIC) said they hoped the background checks will produce income and provide a service.

Anyway, if you need to do a criminal background check in Alabama, there is a site where you can pay the same amount for unlimited background checks. And this is what “smart” users are doing.

Go to this site called Government Records. Now, they allow you to do a free criminal backgrounds check. Just enter the name of the person you are searching. if something comes up on their records, they will give you the option of joining their site for the complete report.

But if nothing preliminary comes up, there’s no need to join. Simple hey! And if you do need to join. Well, they let you do unlimited criminal background checks. So it’s so much cheaper to join this site, than by going to the CJIC for each one.

Anyway, at Government Records you can check anyone’s criminal background check in Alabama. And for any other state if you need to.

Now, if you need to do criminal background checks, try Government Records today.
